A STEAM TRAIN PASSES
50 YEARS ON

On 2 April 2025, Join Transport Heritage NSW and the National Film and Sound Archive for a special celebration of Australia’s finest railway film.  
 

Having just celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, the acclaimed short film will be presented on the big screen in stunning 4K for the very first time at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace.
 

This gala event will also feature a newly produced short documentary by Transport Heritage NSW, delving into the film’s creation with filmmakers Anthony Buckley, Dean Semler, David Haythornthwaite and George Dreyfus, along with insights from Australian film director and producer George Miller.

See the original film, presented on the big screen in stunning 4K for the very first time, along with a brand-new documentary on the film's making.

In addition, enjoy a special screening of Western Endeavour, a short film capturing the first steam train crossing from Sydney to Perth in 1970. Plus, experience never-before-seen footage from NFSA’s Jim Powe Collection - a treasure trove of rare Australian train and tram recordings spanning the late 1960s to the 1990s - brought to life with live commentary
